RETREATS
At Freedom Sings retreats, each veteran is paired with a professional songwriter to create an original song that tells the veteran’s personal military story. Retreats are designed as immersive 1-, 2-, or 3-day experiences.
A typical retreat begins on Friday evening with an informal “ice breaker,” where veterans meet their songwriters and hear them perform some of the hit songs they’ve written.
On Saturday morning, veterans and songwriters gather for breakfast before moving into private writing sessions. In these one-on-one settings, veterans share their stories, and together they transform those experiences into powerful songs.
The retreat culminates on Saturday evening with a grand finale concert, held at a community center, local church, or other gathering place. This is an emotional and unforgettable evening as the songwriters perform or debut the veterans newly created songs before family, friends, and the community. Sponsors and local news media are often present, capturing the powerful moments and helping share the impact of the program with a wider audience. Veterans also have the chance to speak about their experiences, making the event deeply personal, healing, and inspiring.
